good Communication is essential: No matter how many times you take this class it is hard to change
the way you talk and especially how you respond to others
communication. Communication is the key ingredient to
success whether it is at home or at work.
Learn communication and reflective listening techniques that
will help you with every aspect of your life. Includes tips
on conflict resolution and problem solving skills for
everyday and work specific issues. January
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR TECHNIQUES:
Clients behavior can be challenging, what do you do about
it? What are positive approached to bad situations? How to
decode behavior, find the underlying cause and use control
of your own behavior to manage the situation in a positive
way. Use redirection, ignoring, avoid power struggles,
think beyond the obvious. February
Whose Rights are they anyway?
Everybody has rights and choices. We as caregivers need to make
sure we honor the choice of the client regardless of our
personal views and values. But caregivers have rights too,
how do w make choices that accommodate both. How to balance
safety and health with choice and client rights. March
What does ?DD ? mean: The history and challenges specific to people with developmental
disabilities to include children and adults. Is it the same
as mental retardation? What is the diagnosis, how many
kinds are there? Diversity and Acceptance and the DD
population. April
MANDATED REPORTING: What are the definitions of abuse, neglect, and exploitation
and when do I report. The best way to protect
yourself is to learn how to document and report in an
objective way. Know what is reportable and what needs to be
documented, when, how, and what. But it is not only about
protecting yourself how do you report? What do you report?

Grieving for hidden losses: Grief is a process that affects all of us when we lose something
or someone we care about. Losses are sometimes not so
obvious and affect us in different ways. How losses affect
behavior, and how we can help as caregivers. It is important
to understand and address our own feelings and the feelings
of the client and family when a loss occurs. June
PLANS OF CARE:
Translating the assessment into a plan that can best serve
the client. What is our responsibility and how do we work
it all into a schedule that works for everyone. Addresses
your role as a caregiver and the responsibility you have to
carry out this assessment as it is written. Plans of Care
must be made out to accommodate the clients choices for
service delivery. July
Feel good about yourself: Feeling good about yourself and the job you are doing helps to
make the days, shorter and encourages you to go back to work
the next day. If you don?t feel good about yourself it is
hard to do a good job. Manage your own stress and gain
self esteem August
ethics, SETTING LIMITS: Ethical questions come up all the time; answers are sometimes
hard to process. Discussion around the principals of ethics
in the caregiver?s work place can be different shades of
gray, some of the right things we do feel wrong, how do you
sort it out? Confidentiality, creating your own space and
setting limits. September
Manage your time have a better day: You can?t be everything to everybody. The demands of work and
home is a difficult balance. Learn how to manage time and
balance your day. October
Am I really what I eat?: This session covers healthy eating, reading food labels, vitamins
and nutrients and special diets all with good flavor.
Nutritionally dense eating and good diets can help you feel
better and help your client. November
REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:
What is reasonable accommodation? 504 plans, How can we
look at things differently to allow success for people who
need accommodation? The law and how to make it work for all
of us.
Blood Born Pathogens ? not me!:
HIV/ AIDs and Hepatitis A, B and C. How to prevent them by
using Universal Precautions. Required annually. A two in
one training for ADA and Blood Born Pathogens training.
Basic life saving techniques:: A four-hour class that will certify you in CPR and First Aid for
the next two years. Medic First Aid certification with the
new updated guidelines for lay provider CPR and First Aid
Version 6.0, introduction to using the FRx Defibrillator.
FUNDAMENTALS
Fun filled class of 28 hours on everything you need to know
to do a good job as a Caregiver. From nutrition, to bed
baths, from cleaning to paperwork this class will help you
be a great caregiver.
